Parents Teaching Parents

"Parents Teaching Parents" provides parents with the skills they need to effectively work with schools on behalf of their children within the special education system and, secondly, provide peer support for parents. A Parent Advocate from the Arc and a parent volunteer from the Arc are the training facilitators. This parent-training curriculum aims to improve educational outcomes with the lowest level of conflict and least amount of professional involvement possible. The Arc of Livingston offers training in the following areas:
  • Understanding Special Education Law
  • The Individualized Education Plan and Its Purpose
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Facilitating Your Child's IEP
This project looks to meet the following objectives:
  • Increase the strength and the stability of families
  • Increase parents' confidence and competence in working with schools to produce positive, functional outcomes for their children
  • Enhance the maximum potential for child development by increasing effective communication between parents and schools
  • Increase parents' access to tools that can support and empower them
